SCC presents ‘Kindertransport’ play

As part of Scottsdale Community College’s fifth annual Genocide Awareness Week, SCC’s School of Film+Theatre will present two free productions of play “Kindertransport.” The play will be performed 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22, at Two Waters Circle Amphitheater at SCC, 9000 E. Chaparral Road, Scottsdale.

The 1993 play by Diane Samuels depicts the agony of separating a child from her parents, and the consequences later in life, when the child is an adult. It does so through the story of 9-year-old Eva Schlesinger, a fictional composite drawn from interviews with surviving “kinder” interviewed by Samuels. “Kindertransport” means child’s transport in German. The play is based on the evacuation of 10,000 Jewish children under age 17 from Germany to England between 1938 – barely a month after Kristallnacht, a two-day pogrom against German Jews that became known as the “Night of Broken Glass” – and the declaration of war in 1939.
