Jennifer and Steven Schwarz

Jennifer and Steven Schwarz will be honored by the Valley of the Sun JCC with the Irv Shuman Award.

The Valley of the Sun JCC (The J) is honoring Jennifer and Steven Schwarz for their work in the community.

The couple will be presented with The J’s Irv Shuman Award for their commitment, passion, service and leadership within the community during the The J’s “New York State of Mind” fundraiser on Dec. 2.

“We are very touched to receive this honor,” Jennifer Schwarz said. “Irv Shuman was a pillar in our community, as are other past recipients of this award. We are also so appreciative of the donors who made the campus happen for our community, most notably Mr. Bill Levine. Lives are changed in the campus building and by The J specifically.”

Schwarz added that the award doesn’t serve so much as a recognition for the couple, but as an inspiration for others to serve the community “the way that Mr. Shuman and those who came before and after him have done.”

When the Schwarz family moved to Phoenix, they wanted to do their part to help make The J a focal point in their new Jewish community.

Jennifer has spearheaded efforts that include the building of the outdoor playground, teen sports league and a teen lounge. She has also been involved with preschool and youth programs.

Steven has taken part in many of the financial and operational aspects of The J, including having leadership positions on multiple boards and committees.

In addition to The J, Jennifer and Steven Schwarz are strong supporters of many other Jewish organizations. Their hope is to pass on that value of supporting the Jewish community to their three children, 17-year-old Max, 15-year-old Kori and 12-year-old Emma. JN
