Team Phoenix brought home 15 medals from the JCC Maccabi Games held in St. Louis July 29-Aug. 5.

Alden Brown won five gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal in swimming and Ben Kreisberger won three gold medals and two bronze medals in track and field.

Max Pernicks won a bronze medal in tennis and the boys basketball team, ages 16 and up, won a bronze medal.

This year’s team had 50 athletes this year; last year, 29 young athletes traveled to Dallas to compete and won five medals.

About 1,200 Jewish athletes, ages 12-16, from across the United States, as well as Israel and a few other countries, competed in this year’s Games. According to the St. Louis Jewish Light, more than 4,500 people attended the opening ceremony, held at Chaifetz Arena on July 31.

Team Phoenix athletes also competed in football, soccer, tennis and volleyball and Abbi Anderson and Leeor Urman were star reporters. The delegation also included six adult coaches and an assistant delegation head.

Next year, the VOSJCC hopes to beat that record when the Games are held in Birmingham, Alabama, said Alexa Wollach, delegation head, in an email.
