Susan Schanerman

On June 30, Susan Schanerman will step down as Temple Emanuel of Tempe’s cantorial soloist and religious school director. Schanerman, who has served the Reform congregation in many capacities for 13 years, including overseeing the music programs and teaching adult education classes, is looking forward to the next chapter in her life. Wearing many hats at the synagogue has been wonderful, she says, “because there are always different challenges along with opportunities to learn and grow. It’s never dull.”

As you’ll read below, Schanerman will take a position as a Hospice of the Valley chaplain, but will also work to complete her doctorate at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago, from which she holds a master’s degree in Jewish studies. She is writing her dissertation on Arnost Lustic, a Czech Holocaust survivor. “I am ABD [all but dissertation],” Schanerman says. In addition, she holds a master’s degree in education and a bachelor’s degree in French from Arizona State University. Why so many degrees? “I enjoy an intellectual challenge and the satisfaction gained from academic achievement,” she says.
