The concept of Jewish peoplehood animates Daniel Gordis’ writing – whether his books or columns for media outlets as diverse as Jerusalem Post and Bloomberg View.

“I think that I was lucky enough to grow up in a community and with parents who really did teach us the value of belonging to something larger than ourselves, and I think we live in a world now in which – in many places, and parts of Israel to be sure but certainly a large swath of American Jewish life – religion is seen as being something about satisfying my own needs,” Gordis said. “In other words, I have spiritual needs, I have spiritual questions, Judaism’s obligation or Judaism’s purpose is to comfort me, to inspire me, whatever. It’s not about what I owe, and I think that the notion of Jewish peoplehood is not about what’s owed to me but what I owe to something larger than myself.”
