Scholars, students and ordinary citizens from all 50 states have been digging through old newspapers, letters and other historical documents to answer this question: What did Americans know about the Holocaust and when did they know it?

“Americans, people walking the same streets that I walk, living in the neighborhoods where I live, what could they have known at the time, and did that knowledge translate into action or changed attitudes?” asked Edna Friedberg, a historian at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) in Washington, D.C.
