Carol Consalvo was destined to be an advocate for the public.

“I was 14 in 1959, and I casually strolled into the uptown Manhattan Democratic field office and started stuffing envelopes for John F. Kennedy in his run for president,” she said. “This section of Manhattan was a solidly Irish American neighborhood, as well as a hub for the German Jewish refugees who came to New York in the late ’30s escaping from Nazi Germany. In fact, this neighborhood was nicknamed Frankfurt on the Hudson because there were so many refugees in the area.”
