Local Jewish community reacts to controversial Polish law

As a teen roaming the Polish countryside trying to evade the Nazis, Morris Friebaum saw the best and worst of the Polish people.

“For all those months, he was this 14- to 15-year-old boy with nothing but the dirty clothes on his body,” said his daughter, Valley resident Janice Friebaum. “He had to knock on doors of farmers and ask for food and sleep in their haystacks and fields and barns. Sometimes people came to the door and obviously knew he was a Jewish boy on the run because of how filthy he was, and they would give him a loaf of bread. But plenty of others opened the door, looked at him and said, ‘Go away, you dirty Jew,’ and slammed the door in his face.”
