Yityish Aynaw’s life reads like a modern fairy tale, full of early tragedy, a great journey and even a happily ever after. Born in northwest Ethiopia near the city of Gondar, her father died when she was 2 during the long war with Eritrea.

“I don’t even know what he looked like,” Aynaw, the 2013 Miss Israel, said during a recent visit to the Valley. She was in town to address students at Arizona State University in a program presented by the Hillel Jewish Student Center in partnership with the Jewish National Fund.
