As many readers in the Valley’s Jewish community know, I am not Jewish. I was raised a Catholic in a Mexican-American neighborhood in El Paso, Texas, and somehow ended up in the “Jewish part of town.” I learned about Judaism from my friends and their parents. I learned to respect Judaism from my parents.

As a former religion reporter and a curious explorer, over the years I learned more about many other faiths and even more about Judaism. I’m no Talmudic scholar, but I sometimes surprise myself by explaining the meanings of certain rituals or holidays to a few secular Jews — something that some local rabbis find amusing. But there is one thing I realized I don’t know how to do: see the world through Jewish eyes.
