“The Reds,” “The Red Scare,” “The Red Menace.” Those of us who lived during the Cold War remember hearing those phrases or at least being familiar with them. As part of the last generation to enter adulthood with the Soviet Union still in existence, the phrase I most remember was President Ronald Reagan’s “The Evil Empire.”

The worst thing you could call a someone was a commie. Nazi was up there too, but we had beat them in the war. The U.S. men’s hockey team beating the USSR at the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, sent most of the country into spasms of joy. It was our junior varsity version of D-Day.
