Tailoring Biz

Arkady and Mazal Uvaydov’s Camelback Tailoring & Alterations has been in business for 21 years and recently relocated to Scottsdale.

If ever there were a hard-working couple who could be described as tailor-made for each other, it’s Mazal and Arkady Uvaydov.

Married for 35 years, Mazal is a professional seamstress, while Arkady is a master tailor. Together, this Russian-born husband-and-wife tailoring team has successfully owned and operated Camelback Tailoring & Alterations in Phoenix for the past 21 years, where they’ve spent countless hours side by side at their respective sewing machines.

Mazal is known for her personalized fittings, alterations and custom designs of women’s bridal gowns, prom gowns, bat mitzvah dresses, formal dresses, men’s suits and professional uniforms, while Arkady is an expert at zipper repairs, watch repairs, hems and any other kinds of sewing repair.

But what really sets this couple apart from other dry cleaning and tailoring operations in the Valley is the fact that Mazal and Arkady, members of Ahavat Israel Congregation in Phoenix, specialize in the careful handling and dry cleaning of tallit. Not every dry cleaning establishment knows how to correctly tie and untie the tzitzit — but Mazal and Arkady do. They’ve seen too many tallit that have been accidentally ruined at other dry cleaners.

“I’ve cleaned hundreds of tallit over the years, and it makes me so happy when I’m able to get a decades-old tallis looking fresh, bright and new again,” Mazal said.

With three grown children, and now three grandchildren, the Uvaydovs recently moved their business from Camelback Road in Phoenix to Scottsdale. They are now in the same shopping plaza as their son Natan’s popular kosher restaurant, Kitchen 18.

“The move into our new location has been seamless,” Arkady joked, “and we’re looking forward to continuing our sewing, tailoring and dry cleaning work for many years to come.”

Camelback Tailoring & Alterations is located at 10419 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale, on the southeast corner of Shea and Scottsdale roads. For more information, or to schedule a personalized fitting, call 480-998-1828 or visit camelbacktailoringandalterations.com. JN
