The Arizona Jewish Historical Society will honor Shotsy Abramson at its 2016 annual meeting, 11 a.m. Sunday, May 15, at the Cutler-Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, 122 E. Culver St., Phoenix.
Abramson will receive the Risa Mallin Community Service Award.
AZJHS is honoring Abramson for her years of service to the local Jewish community, according to Lawrence Bell, AZJHS executive director. In addition to her 40-year connection with the Hillel Jewish Student Center at Arizona State University, she was a founding member of Temple Emanuel of Tempe, and since her retirement at Hillel, she has volunteered at AZJHS. “She has been a wonderful addition to our team,” Bell said via email.
The Risa Mallin Community Service Award, created in 2005 to honor AZJHS’s former executive director, recognizes people who have made an impact in the Valley’s community through service and volunteerism.
The event will also feature the Phoenix premiere screening of “Moses on the Mesa,” a short film about the 19th-century Jewish pioneer Solomon Bibo, and a discussion led by filmmaker Paul Ratner. There will also be a dairy brunch by Dancing Chef Catering.
Tickets are $30 members, $40 nonmembers.
