Reaction to President Donald Trump’s announcement last week that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will move its embassy there from Tel Aviv is being met with commendation, caution and condemnation across the American Jewish spectrum.

At a donor recognition event held by the Jewish Federation of Greater Phoenix on Dec. 10, William Daroff, senior vice president for public policy and director of the Washington, D.C., office of the Jewish Federations of North America said, “We, the Federations system, have been on record since the 1970s as supporting Jerusalem being officially named and recognized as the capital of the state of Israel. Obviously, the timing here is not great. The timing, frankly, will never be great. The president did what the president did and I think it’s something we should salute, but it’s also something we need to be prayerful about — pray that people do not get hurt by this decision. We know folks on the other side are looking for excuses to do bad things.”
