When Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken took the stage at the Orpheum Theatre in Phoenix on Sunday, it came on the heels of the violence that erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia, during a “white unity” rally.

“These were white supremacists, and what’s very troubling is that they come with helmets and clubs and they came looking for trouble,” Franken told the audience. “We have to speak out against that kind of hatred. What was also particularly bothering me was that the president made a statement and didn’t condemn white supremacists.”
