If you want to visit the Anti-Defamation League’s regional office in Phoenix, you enter a normal midrise in the uptown area of the Central corridor, and take the elevator up. You ring a doorbell outside a nondescript door. Someone inside watches on a monitor and buzzes you in if you don’t look threatening, and then there’s a small antechamber where you’re screened again before being allowed into the reception area.

Amid the law offices and other business suites in the building, these certainly seem like extraordinary security measures. However, these precautions are necessary because ADL has some very nasty enemies as it works “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike.”
