Fireworks may be what you'd expect from a novel set on the Fourth of July, especially one sparked by the grisly death of a journalist in Iraq.

But Joshua Henkin's "The World Without You" (Pantheon Books, $26 hardcover) eschews showy pyrotechnics in lieu of a simply wrought plot, carefully structured narrative and finely drawn characters to delve into the ways in which a family deals with such a loss.
