When the Jewish Genetics Diseases Center of Greater Phoenix first started doing genetic carrier testing in 2005, the standard was to test for four diseases: Canavan disease; cystic fibrosis; familial dysautonomia; and Tay-Sachs disease.

In 2007, the center expanded to a nine-disease panel. Today, Jewish individuals of Ashkenazi (Eastern European) descent can be tested for 18 Jewish genetic disorders, many of which are debilitating and/or fatal in childhood or young adulthood.
