Melissa Manchester loves “the life” of a singer-songwriter and she says so clearly on her most recent album, 2015’s “You Gotta Love the Life.” That album served as an interactive learning experience in which she taught music students at University of Southern California about “the life” as they taught her how to be an “indie” artist.

“What I teach is called ‘The Art of Conversational Singing,’” she says via telephone from her Los Angeles home. “So what it is is a large sweep of ‘the life,’ because most young students have no idea of what 45 years down the road looks like.  ...
